Yahoo again is a search engine which spiders the pages on the Web, indexes them in its database and later performs various mathematical operations to produce the pages with the search results. It is the second most active spider crawler on the Web.
Optimizing a site for all the three major sites is not an easy task. Earlier it was believed all the three search engines were opposite of each other. If a site ranked top in google it was in lower ranks in yahoo and vice versa. When the search engine professional tried to optimize a site for both the search engines it would end up in low results in both of them.
Yahoo has more number of pages indexed than google and so it is more active. Another difference between Yahoo! and Google is the sandbox. Google's sandbox is deeper, so if you have made recent changes to your site, you might have to wait a month or two till these changes are reflected in the search results. Google emphasizes on back links, while Yahoo sticks to on page factors, like keyword density in the title, the URL, and the headings. This is because Yahoo is first a directory and then a search engine.
The following should be considered while optimizing for Yahoo:
Keyword Density: Yahoo emphasizes on keyword density. A Website with high keyword density may fare well in Yahoo. The average keyword counts that seem to work are as follows:
(a) Title Tag: The title tag should have 15% to 20% of keyword density, as Yahoo displays the title tag content in its result page. The title should be thus written as a readable sentence.
(b) Body Text: The body text should have 3% of keyword density. Each page can contain 3-4 keywords in Bold.
(c) META Tags: The Meta tag should have 3% of keyword density. Important keywords should be included in the beginning. But care should be taken not to use te keywords repeatedly or else Yahoo will consider it Spamming.
(d) Description tag: The description tag should be written as a readable sentence.
Inbound Links/Back Links: Inbound links are considered to be very important on yahoo. The links from other sites pointing to your site are inbound links. Having considerable links, with appropriate link texts, from quality sites increases your site's ranking in Yahoo.
Static Pages and Dynamic Pages: Even Yahoo prefers static pages to dynamic pages. Sometimes Yahoo may fail to index dynamic pages. Therefore, following should be considered while making a search engine friendly website:
1. Static pages should have keyword-rich content to increase the rank of your site on Yahoo
2. For important dynamic pages, a site map or quick links section with links to all the Web pages can be prepared, to help the spider crawl the pages easily.
Frames: frames should be avoided as much as possible, as most of the spiders find it difficult to crawl.
