Selecting a Quality Domain Name

When your website is ready to launch try to select a good domain name. A good domain name is one that will be immediately remembered by your visitors, and also reveals the information about the website. A domain name is used to locate a particular web site on the Internet. It is a part of the Uniform Resource Locator (URL) and instructs the browser as to where to find a particular web page.

A great domain name will enable a potential visitor to guess the web address and will contain your most relevant keyword phrase.

When you're ready to launch your web site, you'll need to make two very important decisions -- what your domain name will be and where you will host your new site. There are many factors which are useful in determining a good domain name and the best hosting location. Out of which few are as follows:

Domain Name must reflect your Website

The most important thing is that your domain name should reflect what your web site is all about. For example, if your web site is about hotels, you certainly wouldn't want to select a domain name like 'www.cricketindia.com,' since this would have nothing to do with your web site's focus. You would want to select a domain name that tells the world what your web site is all about -- something like 'www.besthotels.com.'

Domain Name contain Keywords

There is great importance of keywords. Try to select a domain name that contains your most relevant keyword phrase because some Search Engines place relevancy on them. A keyword phrase is two or more words that best describe your web page. If your web page is focusing on hotels, your best keyword phrase will be "cheap hotels."

Domain Name must be easily remembered

Try to make a domain name that will be easily remembered because if you use difficult domain name than it would decrease your website traffic as the visitor would not be able to remember it.

Select the Best Domain Extension

Another consideration of importance is the domain name extension. Although there are many new domain extensions available, dotcom is still the best choice. When typing in a web address, Internet users automatically want to type in a .com extension, since this is the extension that has been embedded into our brains from the start. Another thing is that we can type it by using shortcut keys (Ctrl + ENTER).

Avoid Using Numbers in Your Domain Name

• Don’t use numbers in your domain name because it will confuse the visitor that it is a number not a text.
• Avoid using Dashes and Underscores in Your Domain Name
• Avoid using dashes, underscores or any other characters within your domain name that may cause confusion.
• Avoid Using Abbreviations in Your Domain Name
• Try to avoid abbreviations in your domain name. For this either your organization must be famous or your abbreviation should be understandable. It is also difficult for user to remember it.
• Avoid Using Long Domain Names
• The long domain name are either very hard to remember or sometimes create confusion.

Ensure Your Domain Name is Not a Trademark Infringement

Trademark infringement could cost you your entire business. It is your responsibility to ensure that your potential domain name doesn't infringe on any registered trademarks, as the trademark laws that apply in the hard copy world also apply on the Internet. Any company that registers a trademark has the right to protect their trademark and has the right to notify you that your domain name is infringing upon their trademark.

Take your time and select a quality domain name that will grow with your business. It will be well-worth your time and effort in the long run.
